Job Description

CancerControl Alberta in conjunction with the University of Calgary, are seeking a 1.0 FTE Medical Oncologist to start by January 2, 2018 or sooner at the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre (MYCC) in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The successful applicant will become a member of a multidisciplinary cancer program located at the Margery E.Yuill Cancer Centre (MYCC) site in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and will join a team of medical staff, Nurse Practitioners and medical support staff working in the South Zone.

The MYCC in Medicine Hat is one of four Regional Cancer Centres within CancerControl Alberta’s Community Oncology portfolio. Serving Southern Alberta and Southeastern British Columbia and Southwestern Saskatchewan, the centre delivers a wide range of state of the art treatment and care to cancer patients. Cancer care practice at the MYCC is centered around 7 major tumor groups with rarer tumors managed in conjunction with consultation and expertise from the tertiary centers in Calgary and Edmonton.

The MYCC operates within a provincial framework for cancer care supported by provincial clinical guidelines and standards, focused on patient centered care. Medical Oncologists are expected to participate in local and provincial tumor team based activities including clinical case reviews at tumor board rounds, annual, provincial tumor team meetings, local quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives and educational programs and are supported by a network of Medical Oncologists province wide.
Medicine Hat is a growing community of 63,260 people in southeast Alberta. Located 169 km east of Lethbridge and 295 km southeast of Calgary, Medicine Hat and the adjacent Town of Redcliff are surrounded by Cypress County. Often described as an oasis in the midst of the prairies, the historic city of Medicine Hat makes a good base for day trips and is an Alberta destination worth exploring.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver excellent patient care and must be eligible for licensure in Alberta and must have obtained Fellowship in Medical Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada by the time of appointment.

The Remuneration will be calculated in accordance with the Cancer Control Alberta Physician compensation grid for Medical Ocologists. $314,781.00 - $453,117.00 per annum dependant on qualifications and experience.

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.

Continuing Medical Education reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible Practitioner receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for three years.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications include an MD, certification in Internal Medicine, special competency in Medical Oncology (or equivalent), and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
