The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for the joint position of Division Director (Academic) and Section Head (Clinical) of Pulmonary Medicine. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Division of Pulmonary Medicine offers a comprehensive range of clinical programs, with dedicated clinics for asthma, COPD interstitial lung disease, tuberculosis, adult cystic fibrosis, sleep disorders and pulmonary hypertension. The Division is also home to one of the largest lung transplant programs in Canada, which positions Edmonton as a hub for the assessment and management of advanced lung disease. A full range of clinical support is available for advanced respiratory care, including an in-patient ward capable of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support and pulmonary hypertension therapy, and a brand new, state-of-the-art bronchoscopy suite. The Division focuses upon the delivery of high-quality clinical care, subspecialty medical education and translational research.
Research in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine is focused primarily on airway disease (COPD and asthma). The pulmonary research group focuses it’s expertise on cell biology and cellular physiology, and the clinical research arm on rehabilitation, clinical trials, health economics and international health. The Division offers a fully accredited 2-year subspecialty residency training program in Pulmonary Medicine and contributes to the educational curriculum in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and other allied health professions at the University of Alberta.
The Division Director is responsible for all recruitment, research, education, and clinical services of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Alberta Hospital. He or she is expected to be a leader who will further develop the Division to rival the best pulmonary groups worldwide and advance the clinical, research and educational mandate within the Department of Medicine.
The Alberta Health Services Section Head for Pulmonary Medicine is responsible for the delivery of all Pulmonary Medicine services in the Edmonton Zone. This includes four major urban and four smaller community teaching hospitals. The University Hospital furthermore is the major referral center for Northern Alberta and the Northern regions of adjoining provinces and territories. The Pulmonary Medicine Section Head is responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing service plans to meet current and future demands for Pulmonary care in the Edmonton Zone and its referral regions.
The successful candidate will hold an MD or equivalent degree, with certification in Pulmonary Medicine, and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). He or she will be recognized internationally through scholarly accomplishment in research and teaching. Preference will be given to individuals with administrative experience in an academic setting.

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
