The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for Academic Physiatrists to expand our academic division. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Department of Medicine is recognized as a national and international leader in specialty training and research. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta has also been internationally recognized as one of the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Department of Medicine is home to 12 full-time academic physiatrists and researchers and approximately 22 associated clinical academic colleagues. The Division has one of the longest running and best known PMR residency training programs in Canada and currently has 13 full-time medical trainees. In addition to clinical training, the Division of PMR has a record of strong and well-funded research, particularly in the areas of spinal cord injury recovery and treatment as well as neuro-prosthetics and neural integration. Faculty members also host and supervise a number of graduate students in a variety of disciplines. Our Division members have been the recipients of many national and international awards recognizing their contributions to rehabilitation science and education. A new CFI Centre for Neuro-rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Neuroscience is also under the direction of faculty in our Division and is currently in the implementation process. The Division of PMR is also strongly associated with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, one of the largest freestanding rehabilitation hospitals in North America, serving all of Northern Alberta, parts of British Columbia, and northern Canada.
Our Division is seeking to expand our academic and clinical mission, particularly in the areas of undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and the rehabilitation of stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury. The successful candidate will be an MD (or recognized equivalent) with certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. As clinical service is a required component of these positions, the candidate must also be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and privileging with Alberta Health Services/Covenant Health.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement. Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP) in the Department of Medicine and is highly competitive. AARP remuneration is based on a multi-step grid and initial compensation will be commensurate with education and experience. In addition, tenure stream appointments at the University of Alberta have a desirable comprehensive benefits package. ($333,000-$450,000)
Academic rank will also be commensurate with previous experience and training. This position is directly accountable to both the academic division Director and the Clinical Section Head, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone for clinical activities. All tenure stream positions require research, teaching, administrative, and clinical duty. The exact time apportionment of these duties is negotiable, depending on the candidate.

Qualifications & Experience
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (desired)
A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
