The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Surgery, Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, and Alberta Health Services invite applications for an academic Otolaryngologist specializing in Rhinology/Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery. The successful applicant will be based primarily at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health education institutions. The Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Program presently consists of 34 members who provide comprehensive services for a wide geographic area including Northern Alberta and neighboring provinces. The program utilizes the most current equipment and technology including image guided surgery, laser surgery, robotic surgery, and intraoperative MRI.
Alberta Health Services is Canada’s largest and only province-wide health region, which includes the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). The site is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, providing services for a population of over 3 million people. The facility provides treatment for more than 700,000 patients annually from across Western and Northern Canada. It offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services within, head and neck surgery, cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, critical care, transplant, and trauma care,
The successful candidate will have a special continuing (academic) faculty appointment in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at an appropriate rank. This position will consist of 35% research, 25% clinical service, 25% non-classroom teaching, 10% classroom based teaching, and 5% administration. Contributions to education at the undergraduate, graduate, and specialty levels are expected from all faculty surgeons. The successful candidate will contribute to broadening the research base in the area of Rhinology. The clinical duties will involve support for the Rhinology/Skull Base program in the Edmonton Zone, and participation in the Zone’s on-call rotation.
Candidates must hold the FRCSC designation in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery or an equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the province of Alberta. The candidate should have fellowship training in Rhinology/Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, as well as appropriate research training and experience at the MSc or preferably PhD level. Remuneration will be fee-for-service through billings submitted by the physician to Alberta Health. ($300,000-$500,00)

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
