Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta are recruiting a Neuro-Ophthalmologist within the Edmonton Zone, with privileges at the Eye Institute of Alberta sites including the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Stollery Children’s hospital. This position may be considered for Geographic Full Time (GFT) appointment.
The successful candidate will provide expertise in the management of neuro-ophthalmology conditions affecting adults and/or children. There is a strong desire to develop an outstanding team of neuro-ophthalmologists within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences which collaborates actively with colleagues in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology. The Neuro-Ophthalmologist will have access to advanced diagnostic testing including perimetry, high resolution OCT, ERG, VEP as well as support from Orthoptists, Technicians, Technologists, and Registered Nurses.
This position will be a site-based ophthalmologist within the Edmonton Zone with an expectation that s/he will apply for an appointment to the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alberta, with rank determined by seniority. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta and include responsibilities in teaching, research and service/administration. Teaching of learners at all levels, including ophthalmology and neurology residents and fellows, medical students, ophthalmic nurses and technicians will be a pivotal part of this role. Clinical duties will include an on-call rotation at the discretion of the Edmonton Zone Clinical Section Head for Ophthalmology. Remuneration will include fee for service billings and should the candidate be offered a GFT position, GFT salary commensurate with level of appointment.
Alberta Health Services and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry collaborate in one of Canada’s leading academic health sciences centers, recognized nationally and internationally for combined leadership in clinical services, education and research. Successful applicants will have an opportunity to interact with a stimulating and productive community of ophthalmologists and vision scientists committed to high quality interdisciplinary vision research in Edmonton and Calgary. Over 35 ophthalmologists work as clinicians in the University of Alberta Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at two major teaching hospitals, the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Stollery Children's Hospital. Areas of research strength are currently clinical trials, ocular genetics, electrophysiology and tele-ophthalmology.
Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Candidates should have completed a Residency in Ophthalmology or Neurology and at least one year of further fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology. A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
