Job Description

Alberta Health Services (AHS) in partnership with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are inviting applications for a Division Director in Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), to join the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Women’s Health Program in Edmonton, Alberta.
Edmonton is one of Canada’s most vibrant and exciting cities, and home to the Lois Hole Hospital for Women on the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus. It is a tertiary acute care hospital which consists of 18 full-time Obstetricians/Gynecologists in private practice and 21 sub-specialists, 8 of which are Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, who perform more than 7000 deliveries and 5,000 gynecological surgeries per year. It offers a dynamic Women’s Health Program dedicated to strengthening women’s health services, enhanced teaching, clinical innovation and research.
The successful candidate will join the clinical academic Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division and our multi-disciplinary clinic team, which provides high-risk pregnancy consultation and ultrasound services for Northern Alberta at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. The Lois Hole Hospital for Women (LHHW) is one of Canada’s premier women’s hospitals. It is one of Canada’s busiest maternity centers, with over 7000 deliveries annually, and provides women of Alberta and northern Canada clinical facilities focusing on high-risk obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine and specialized gynecological services and cancer surgery. The MFM clinical practice includes care for both in-patients and out-patients, with over 21,000 patient encounters seen annually. (
There are outstanding opportunities for research. The department is home to research groups with world-class reputations in the area of preterm birth, preeclampsia and other maternal complications that lead to chronic disease processes in mother and/or child. The department is also distinguished by expertise and support in epidemiology and statistics. The Ob-Gyn Department is currently working with the FoMD, AHS, the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute ( in developing dedicated clinical research space within the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist with a strong emerging or established clinical and academic track record. Interest and experience in successful clinical and academic leadership is a requirement for this position.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital is affiliated with the University of Alberta and serves as an important tertiary teaching hospital for residents and students. The MFM Division has also recently received approval to establish a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada MFM Residency Training Program. Therefore, the successful candidate will hold a Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry University of Alberta, which has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.
The successful applicant shall have or be eligible for certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and for appointment to the Alberta Health Services Medical Staff. Completion of a clinical fellowship in MFM is required, and priority will be given to applicants with additional clinical or academic skills, training and/or interests.
Remuneration is based an alternative funding relationship (ARP) for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The current ARP income range is around $250,000.00 to 400,000.00 annually.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
