The Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is accepting applications for the position of an Academic Spinal Neurosurgeon.
The Neurosurgery Program at the University of Alberta is committed to the improvement of health through excellence in patient care, leadership in education and research, and in preventative initiatives directed at the promotion of neurological well-being. The Division of Neurosurgery in Edmonton currently has 14 members, and provides all neurosurgical services for a wide geographic area serving a population of over two million people. Every subspecialty is represented and several subspecialties, such as spine, neuro-oncology and neuro-vascular interventional, are expanding. The University Hospital in Edmonton has recently opened a state of the art 3T intraoperative MRI unit, and efforts are underway to bring a radiosurgery installation to Edmonton as well.
The Division is recruiting a spinal neurosurgeon with an Academic appointment to start July, 2018. The position includes a 75% commitment to clinical practice including participation in a general neurosurgery and complex spine on-call program, which includes a 35% commitment to non-classroom teaching. A 25% commitment to classroom teaching, research and administration is also required. The spine program is a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery program, and participate in several registries and clinical trials. Interest in clinical research in terms of registry participation and clinical trial recruitment is therefore required. In addition, interest in basic science research is also welcomed.
Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, with completed training in Neurosurgery, and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Neurosurgery. The candidate should have completed a fellowship in complex spine surgery. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a Masters’ Degree or PhD designation.
The position includes a comprehensive benefits program and competitive salary through the Neurosurgery Academic Alternate Relationship Program (ARP).

Qualifications & Experience

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
