Laboratory Services, Alberta Health Services, in partnership with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a qualified Neuropathologist. The successful applicant may also be considered for an Academic appointment with the University of Alberta’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, ( The successful candidate will join our current group of 96 laboratory physicians and scientists in the Edmonton Zone and 24 pathologists in the Division of Anatomical Pathology at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH).

The UAH laboratory processed approximately 900 neurosurgical and neuromuscular specimens and 120 autopsies in 2016. In addition, the Center for Neuroscience and affiliated neuroscience research groups at the University of Alberta provide significant opportunity to participate in clinical and basic research activities in many aspects of neurobiology and neuropathology. Opportunities exist for independent and/or collaborative research that foster the goals of discovery knowledge and translational research at the University of Alberta. Teaching opportunities are available with this position, and interactive educational opportunities will be encouraged and supported in those candidates with an interest. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with learners at all levels, including residents from anatomical and general pathology, neurology and neurosurgery, as well as medical students, and graduate students.

Applicants shall possess a strong track record of collegiality with co-workers, and evidence of ongoing continued medical education. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, and within a team environment. Time management, strong organizational skills, and excellent communication skills are required. Comprehensive training in all areas of neuropathological diagnostics is required, although sub-specialization in the diagnosis of muscle/nerve diseases would be an asset. The ability of the applicant to participate in a Neuropathology sub-specialty service including multi-disciplinary research and teaching in that sub-specialty will also be considered an asset. Responsibilities will include supervision of technical staff, overseeing the laboratory quality assurance program, on call requirements, teaching and supervision of residents, clinical consultation with physicians, surgeons and oncologists, and liaising with various multidisciplinary committees and groups that develop and monitor laboratory policies, processes and procedures.

The successful candidate shall have or be eligible for certification in Neuropathology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Physicians must also have current Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage. In accordance with the Canadian Foreign Workers requirements, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The position is Sponsorship Eligible.

Salary is according to the Alberta Medical Association grid for physicians in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Starting salary is commensurate with level of fellowship and experience (range $350,197 – 407,373). Cross appointment in one of the Departments associated with the respective divisions may be included with this appointment

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
