The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of GIM in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a General Internist Clinician Scientist to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is one of Edmonton’s largest and longest serving hospitals, offering general and specialized quaternary medical and surgical health services, and featuring one of Canada’s busiest Emergency departments. Located on the University campus, the UAH is one of Canada’s leading health sciences centres serving as the primary and referral site for a diverse community stretching from south Edmonton to western and northern Canada. The hospital operates 650 beds (160 in medicine), cares for over 700,000 patients annually, and employs over 4,800 full-time and part-time staff.
The successful applicant will cover clinical service commitment for General Internal Medicine at the University Hospital. Clinical Services include but are not limited to: inpatient internal medicine clinical teaching and non-teaching units, inpatient and emergency consultations, outpatient urgent access, general medicine and perioperative clinics.
The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with certification in General Internal Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Additional training in research methodology and/or experience in clinical research will be an asset for this position.
Key accountabilities of the Clinician Scientist will include, but will not be limited to health services delivery and fulfillment of the academic mission of General Internal Medicine through medical research and education. The job description as it pertains to these areas may be individualized.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. ($307,130 - $427,130)

Qualifications & Experience
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (desired)
A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
