Laboratory Services, Alberta Health Services, in partnership with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a 0.5 FTE qualified Transfusion Medicine Physician

The Edmonton Zone is the largest zonal transfusion service in Canada, servicing 14 sites of various size and complexity. The Department is a diverse clinical, research and teaching department within the University of Alberta. We offer a full range of clinical services including a two level I trauma centres, solid organ transplantation, high risk obstetrics, Level 1-3 neonatal intensive care, hematology-oncology, and cardiovascular surgery services. The transfusion medicine service includes a blood bank which transfuses over 48,000 red cell components annually.

Clinical duties will include serving as Associate Medical Director (commensurate with experience) and offer medical oversight to all medical, technical and regulatory processes and procedures including quality assurance, hemovigilance and occurrence management reporting, as well as,
promote safe and effective blood transfusion components and services throughout the Edmonton zone. The successful candidate will provide medical direction for blood bank related clinical services as needed, and work closely with clinicians in hematology, oncology, transplantation, neurology, obstetrics, cardiothoracic and trauma surgery. Lead didactic presentations, rounds and seminars for Fellows, Residents, medical students and medical laboratory science students and develop workshops at the local, state and national level.

Applicants shall possess a strong track record of collegiality with co-workers, academic accomplishments, and evidence of ongoing continued medical education. Responsibilities will include supervising technical staff, overseeing the laboratory quality assurance program, on call requirements, teaching and supervision of residents, clinical consultation with physicians, surgeons and oncologists, and liaising with various multidisciplinary committees and groups that develop and monitor laboratory policies, processes and procedures.

The successful candidate shall have or be eligible for certification as a Hematologist, Anesthesiologist, Hematopathologist or General Pathologist with transfusion medicine experience or preferably with certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Physicians must also have current Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage. Consideration will be given to candidates with experience and training in Hematopathology, Clinical Hematology, General Pathology or Anesthesiology with a minimum of 2 years transfusion medicine experience or equivalent. Candidates must have a strong interest and/or documented experience in laboratory management.

Salary is according to the Alberta Medical Association grid for physicians in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Starting salary is commensurate with level of fellowship and experience (range $175,098 – $203,686). Cross appointment in one of the Departments associated with the respective divisions may be included with this appointment.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
