The Specialized Geriatric Services Program (SGS – Clinical Alternative Relationship Plan) in partnership with Alberta Health Services is inviting applications for a Geriatrician / Care of the Elderly Physician to join the Divisions of Geriatric Medicine / Care of the Elderly located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Alberta Health Services is Canada’s largest and only provincial health region providing services for a population of over 3 million people.
The successful candidate will be accredited in either General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine or Family Medicine with a Care of the Elderly certification (MD with equivalent qualification) and eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
This post is an unrivalled opportunity for an interested, engaged and enthusiastic physician to take an active role in acute and rehabilitative geriatric medicine services.
The successful candidate will spend 0.5FTE sited at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital working in rehabilitation of older people following acute admission or direct transfer from the community. Duties at this site will include a weekly outpatient clinic, consisting of new and follow up patients and inpatient consultations for other Glenrose related specialties and geriatric psychiatry. Participation in multiprofessional rounds and family conferences is expected. The remaining time will be spent providing acute inpatient and consultative services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital under the direction of the site lead, working with the existing team of geriatricians and Care of the Elderly physicians. Duties at this site include daily inpatient care on the specialized unit, ward rounds and family meetings in addition to consultations in the emergency department and on the wards.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate education and training programs of the joint divisions of Care of the Elderly and Geriatric Medicine and maintain adequate continuing professional development as dictated by their relevant governing body. Medical liability insurance will be required
All appropriate support (administrative and technical) to enable the successful candidate to excel will be provided. Remuneration for the post is $327,468 – 359,832 depending upon training and hours. A 10% overhead will be payable for business administration
The SGS – ARP is also seeking to expand its educational remit and the successful candidates will be offered a clinical academic colleague appointment with the relevant academic department.

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
