Job Description

Transplant/HPB Surgeon

Alberta Health Services/Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - Department of Surgery

The Division of Transplantation Surgery in cooperation with the Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Clinical Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone is accepting applications for an Abdominal Transplantation / Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon. The primary practice site for this position will be the University of Alberta Hospital.

The Transplant/HPB Service at the University of Alberta/Alberta Health Services currently consists of 3 GFT academic surgeons while the Division of General Surgery presently consists of 53 General Surgeons. The Transplantation Division’s HPB Service provides specialized care to patients from across western Canada in Liver, Pancreas, and Multivisceral Transplantation Surgery, Abdominal Organ Recovery as well as Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery. The Division of Transplantation also provides an American Society of Transplant Surgeons approved fellowship training program in liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
The Division of General Surgery is recruiting a surgeon to start July 1, 2018, although this date is flexible. Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent with completed training in General Surgery and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful applicant will have a job description which includes a commitment to clinical care delivery, education and research. A major commitment to academic surgery is expected. Training in liver transplantation and organ procurement in an ASTS accredited program or equivalent is required. Experience in kidney and pancreas transplantation would be an asset. Experience in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery is expected. Additional training in minimal access hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery would be an important advantage.

The successful applicant will take part in the undergraduate and post-graduate surgery curricula and the fellowship transplantation curricula at the University of Alberta. Therefore, the candidate will be expected to apply for an Academic appointment in the department of Surgery, University of Alberta. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
