The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for Divisional Director and Section Head of Gastroenterology for the Edmonton Zone to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital. The successful candidate will be offered a tenured or tenure track appointment at the Full or Associate Professor level within the Department.
Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine currently has 27 MD members and is one of the largest GI and hepatology centers in Canada. It also has 2 PhD Basic Science and Clinical Epidemiology researchers. It manages a leading-edge research program involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Center of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research. As a major referral centre, the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital has a highly specialized consultation and advanced therapeutic endoscopy facility, a state-of-the-art in-patient unit and highly skilled gastroenterologists, hepatologists and gastrointestinal scientists. The GI Division at the University of Alberta runs general GI as well as specialized GI and Hepatology programs including inflammatory bowel disease, advanced therapeutic endoscopy, cirrhosis care, liver transplantation, nutrition and motility. It also has a large education portfolio involving all levels of medical education and education of allied health professions.
The Divisional Director is responsible for all research, education, administration and clinical Services of GI and Hepatology at the University of Alberta Hospital.
The Section Head for GI in the Edmonton Zone is responsible for delivery of al GI and endoscopy services in all 8 hospitals where endoscopy takes place. He or she also is responsible for the delivery of all GI and Hepatology services in the zone as wella s maintaining and implementing existing services plans and developing new services plans to meet the future demands for delivery of GI and endoscopy care in the zone including the Alberta Colon Cancer Screening program.
The successful candidate will be an MD with certification in Gastroenterology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). He or she will be recognized internationally through scholarly accomplishment in research and teaching. Preference will be given to individuals with administrative experience in an academic setting.
Remuneration will be on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP), which offers a very competitive remuneration package with excellent benefits.($ 333,333 – 469,333)

Qualifications & Experience
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (desired)
A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
