The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for an experienced advanced therapeutic gastroenterologist to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine currently has 20 MD members and is one of the largest GI and hepatology centers in Canada. It manages a leading-edge research program involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Center of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research. As a major referral centre, the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital has a highly specialized consultation and advanced therapeutic endoscopy facility, a state-of-the-art in-patient unit and highly skilled gastroenterologists, hepatologists and gastrointestinal scientists.
The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with certification in Gastroenterology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The individual will have at least 10 years of experience in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, including small bowel enteroscopy and endoscopic ultrasound.
Key accountabilities of the position will include the directorship of research in therapeutic endoscopy with the expectation that the successful candidate will significantly enhance the research productivity of the therapeutic endoscopy group. Therefore proven experience in conducting research studies, a strong track record in publishing and evidence of having taught advanced therapeutic procedures will be a requirement. The position will involve up to 50% protected time for research with the remainder spent on clinical work, teaching and administration.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience ($364,005 - $470,005).

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
