Job Description

The Department of Adult Critical Care, Edmonton Zone, Alberta Health Services in partnership with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Critical Care Medicine invites applications for a Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) Intensivist to be based at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada''s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, renal, critical care, emergency and trauma care, and a state-of-the-art burn unit. The site''s Organ and Tissue Transplant Program is also recognized as a national leader in both success rates and transplant volumes.
The Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone CVICU at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is a 24 bed unit served by 7 fellowship trained intensivists with base training in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Anaesthesia and Cardiovascular Surgery. There are approximately 1500 admissions per year including post-bypass, valve and combined bypass valve cases. We have a rapidly expanding ventricular assist device service as well as the second largest thoracic organ transplant service in Canada. The University of Alberta has been ranked amongst the top 100 teaching and research universities in the world serving over 39,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Department of Critical Care Medicine is a growing clinical and academic-focused Department, currently consisting of 39 Clinical Faculty, 6 primarily appointed and 3 cross appointed Full-time Academic Faculty. The Department has one of the largest Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Adult Critical Care Training programs. In addition, cardiac critical care and CVICU fellowships have been developed. Research spans the spectrum from fundamental and translational work through epidemiology and health services research in all aspects of the practice of Critical Care Medicine.
Individuals dedicated to the development of an academic educational program related to focused echocardiography within the Department of Critical Care Medicine are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be a certified level three cardiographer with expertise in curriculum development. Clinical expertise with a base specialty of Cardiac Anaesthesiology would be preferred but all will be considered. The successful candidate will be a clinical academic colleague within the academic Department of Critical Care Medicine. An appointment as special continuing status Academic Faculty may be considered. S/he is expected to be an active member in the educational, research and quality improvement activities of the CVICU and Department. Specific responsibilities of this position include clinical service (in-house evening and weekend call required), undergraduate and postgraduate education, Departmental continuing professional development and some administration depending upon the candidate’s qualifications and interest and Departmental needs.
The successful candidate will be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC, possess a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
Remuneration will be with Fee for Service billings. Clinical service in base specialty is potentially negotiable and will depend on the individual selected.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
