Job Description

The Tom Baker Cancer Centre (TBCC) in Calgary is seeking a new Radiation Oncologist interested in a 0.6FTE position. You will to join an existing team of 20 Radiation Oncologists, several others of whom work part time. Your clinical focus will include Breast and Cutaneous disease sites. Demonstrated ability in at least one of Leadership, Health Services, Translational or Clinical Trials research will be an asset.

The TBCC is a full-service, academic cancer centre with 8 linear accelerators, orthovoltage and HDR capability. There are active gyne, prostate and breast brachytherapy programs. A new, full service, 109,000 m2 cancer centre, will be operational by 2023-24. TBCC includes the provincial Alberta Radiosurgery Centre and expanding programs for lung, liver and spine SBRT. In 2015, faculty provided 4000 consultations. There are close interdisciplinary working relationships with Medical, Surgical, Gynecologic, Hematologic and Psychosocial Oncology, Palliative Care, Medical Physics and basic science faculty with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute at the University of Calgary. A full complement of ancillary staff and services are available. Clinical trials and translational research programs are augmented by annual, centre-specific, Investigator-Initiated Trial grant opportunities. Inpatients are cared for at the Foothills Medical Centre.

The University of Calgary’s Radiation Oncology Residency Training Program, post-residency Radiation Oncology fellowships and post-graduate programs in Surgical, Medical, Gynecologic, and Hematologic Oncology and Palliative Medicine are all active at TBCC. There are opportunities to teach medical students, residents and fellows from a variety of disciplines.

Calgary is a growing city with a vibrant cultural scene and ready access to outdoor activities in Kananaskis Country (1 hour from TBCC) and Banff, Lake Louise and the Rockies (1.5 hours). For 10 days in July everyone enjoys Stampede.

Remuneration will depend on clinical experience and comply with the agreement between Cancer Control Alberta, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Medical Association. Further details are available upon enquiry. Radiation Oncologists may be either AHS employees or independent contractors.

The physician is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.

Qualifications & Experience

The candidate must have an MD degree and Canadian specialist certification in Radiation Oncology, or the equivalent. You must be eligible for licensure as a specialist by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and for appointment to the medical staff of Alberta Health Services. The successful applicant will be expected to obtain an appointment within the Department of Oncology at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
