Job Description

The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Pediatric Hematology, is seeking a pediatric hematologist at the clinical assistant/associate professor level to join a Section of 4 academic colleagues. The position is currently supported as 1.0 FTE with 60% clinical activity and there will be 30 -40% protected time for research. The ideal candidate will have at least 5-10 years of active practice in an academic setting and should have a demonstrated record of achievement in clinical/translational or basic science research related to pediatric hematology as this position is intended to help the Section establish a program of academic research. The successful candidate will provide clinical expertise across the full spectrum of benign pediatric hematology in both inpatient and outpatient settings; however, additional training and/or demonstrated clinical focus in pediatric hemoglobinopathies or hemostasis/thrombosis is a decided asset as it would complement the existing areas of focus within the group.

The Section of Pediatric Hematology also works closely with colleagues in the Section of Pediatric Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation and Pediatric Immunology. We are a regional bone marrow transplant centre.

The Department of Pediatrics has over 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the rapidly growing Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Calgary is a modern and rapidly growing cosmopolitan municipality with a population of over 1.2 million people, and boasts an excellent school system (both public and private), a vibrant international cultural scene, with proximity (<1 hour) to the Canadian Rocky Mountains (Banff and Jasper National Parks, Lake Louise, etc.). The city is beautifully laid out with rivers, parks and other recreational areas. There are plentiful opportunities for delving into the arts, music and sports. Many attributes contribute to an overall outstanding quality of life.

Remuneration will be determined by the Academic Medicine Health Services Plan and is based on credentials and experience. Typical salary range is between $310,000 to $360,000 per annum.

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.

The AMA, through the Continuing Medical Education (CME) program, reimburses eligible physicians for costs incurred with regard to the maintenance and enhancement of knowledge, skills and competency.

The annual allotment of $2656 carries forward for three years but expires on March 31 of the fourth year if not used.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications include certification in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent and candidates must be eligible for an independent practice license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
