Job Description

Duties include providing clinical service and clinical teaching in the Section of Neurology and clinical teaching. Hospital service will be for the seizure monitoring unit and to provide Seizure Monitoring Unit and City-wide EEG call for 7-9 weeks annually including weekends plus an equivalent number of weeknights. Outpatient clinical work will focus on the management of complex epilepsy and include weekly EEG interpretation.

Fee for Service income will be variable but is estimated between $266K and $466K.

Along with scheduled hospital service for the seizure monitoring unit and for City-wide EEG weeknights and weekends will be included and are considered on call. This will be for 7-9 weeks annually. Specialist On Call stipends for EEG physicians are $272.60 per 24 hours (estimated at an additional $13,357.40 annually for 49 days of call)

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits and overhead costs related to the University of Calgary Medical Group (UCMG).

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will be a member of the Epilepsy Program of the Division of Neurology, and be an active participant within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences ( and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute ( Full participation in the City-wide call schedule and participation in other Division activities including inpatient service and teaching are expected. The successful applicant will be expected to be eligible for an academic appointment of Clinical Lecturer with the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, and the Department of Clinical Neurosciences.

Qualifications include an MD, a specialist certificate in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The candidate must be certified in EEG by the CSCN, and have formal training in the management of patients with complex epilepsies seen at a tertiary care centre, including ICU and continuous EEG monitoring. Training and competence in pre-surgical evaluation, proficiency and experience with various modalities of intracranial EEG planning and interpretation, ECoG, and cortical stimulation for function mapping are preferred. Additional requirements include proficiency in evoked potentials and intraoperative monitoring. Experience in sleep medicine is an asset. We are seeking an individual with proven clinical excellence and a record of working well within a team.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
