Job Description

The Department of Paediatrics ( and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI); invite applications for a full-time contingent term position for a Clinician Scientist at the Assistant to Associate Professor level, to develop an independent research program in translational, clinical, population health or health service research in Neonatology. Alignment of the research interests with the priorities of the University and the 2015-2020 ACHRI strategic plan ( is an asset.

The fully integrated and regionalized (Calgary zone) neonatal program - the largest in Western Canada - provides varied clinical services across 5 level III and level II NICUs (132 beds, 3300 admissions/year) at five teaching hospitals in the City of Calgary. It includes a new (2014) state of the art single room level III NICU at the standing alone Alberta Children’s Hospital. The 25-faculty member Section of Neonatology has a very successful Neonatal fellowship training program, and a solid track record of publicly-funded research. The Department of Paediatrics has over 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

$320 – 400K and is dependent on qualifications. Funding will be provided by the Neonatology Clinical Alternative Relationship Plan (CARP).

Specialist On Call: $580/call x 65 = $35K

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.

Continuing Medical Education reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible Practitioner receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for three years.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications include an MD or equivalent, a certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics or equivalent certification from another professional association, and the completion of a fellowship in Neonatology. An advanced research degree such as a PhD or equivalent is a definitive asset. The position provides 70% protected time for research, and will also include clinical service and teaching at all levels of medical education. This is an excellent opportunity to develop an independent externally-funded research program within an outstanding collaborative environment. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must present evidence of a solid research training and a strong publication record. Applicants at the Associate Professor level must have evidence of a strong publication record, evidence of successful teaching and supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrated research leadership experience with a demonstrated ability to develop both individual and collaborative research programs.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
