Section Head, Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applicants to apply for a tenure track position of Assistant/Associate Professor within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics, as the Section Head, Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization.
The successful applicant will join 12 academic pediatric cardiologists who work together with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team to offer advanced and innovative care for the entire spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease in children and adults. The Stollery Children’s Hospital sees approximately 10,000 children and adults with congenital heart problems and performs 10 to 12 pediatric heart transplants, over 600 cardiac surgeries and over 300 cardiac catheterizations annually. This program includes one of the largest pediatric mechanical cardiac assist device programs in North America, and performs transcatheter valve implantation as well an interventional-surgical hybrid procedures. In addition to clinical care, the division is active in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and has a fully accredited Pediatric Cardiology subspecialty-training program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Program attracts numerous international subspecialty fellows as well, and houses an active basic and clinical science research program, collaborating locally, nationally and internationally.

Interested applicants must hold an MD and must have completed a subspecialty residency in pediatric cardiology, and advanced training in interventional cardiac catheterization. Candidates must be certified or eligible to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatric Cardiology). Candidates with a minimum of 3 years experience in pediatric cardiac catheter Intervention in the setting of an academic pediatric cardiac surgical program are sought for this position.

This position will be comprised of approximately 60% clinical service and 40% academic pursuits: either teaching and/or research. Research can be in any area within Pediatric Cardiology. Contributions to education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels are expected from all faculty.

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be based on the income scale ($401,424.75 to $455,424.75) of a competitive and highly successful academic alternate funding plan.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
