Job Description

Ophthalmologist - Cornea specialist

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta & Alberta Health Services

Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting an ophthalmologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of corneal disease. The Department’s vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research.

The Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) is a Center of Excellence for all levels of ophthalmic care. It serves a population of approximately 3 million people in the Edmonton region, the northern areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan as well as the Northwest and Yukon Territories. The hub for the EIA is the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). Additional sites located within the Edmonton zone include the Stollery Children''s Hospital (SCH), the Westview Health Center (WVHC) and the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital (FSCH). The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences consists of over 40 staff ophthalmologists who work as physicians and surgeons, with teaching appointments within the FOMD at the University of Alberta. Current areas of research strength include clinical trials, ocular genetics, electrophysiology and tele-ophthalmology.

The region currently has four cornea specialists. While maintaining a community-based practice, the successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues to deliver medical and surgical care for patients with corneal, external disease and anterior segment pathology. A minimum of two operating days per month will be provided, as well as time for regular clinics, minor procedures and lasers at the RAH. There will be on call responsibility within the Department as well as teaching involving medical students and residents. There will also be an opportunity to initiate a cornea fellowship program. Teaching will be enabled through an appointment as a Clinical Academic Colleague within the FOMD. The FOMD is internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

Candidates will have completed a residency in ophthalmology, a minimum one year fellowship in medical and surgical aspects of corneal disease, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
