The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites
applications for a contingent tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate Professor within the Department of
Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
We seek an outstanding clinician investigator or clinician educator who would be committed to the vision of the
Department which is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education
Applicants at the Assistant Professor level will have a MD or MD/PhD, must have completed residency training
in Ophthalmology, and be certified or eligible to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada. They will demonstrate a strong potential for developing a nationally recognized research
program and/or make significant innovative contributions to enhancing the quality of educational programs
offered within the Department and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD). Applicants at the Associate
Professor level are expected to have an extramurally and nationally recognized program and/or have a proven
track record of providing exemplary support for developing educational programs/scholarships.
The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences consists of over 40 ophthalmologists who work as
physicians and surgeons and who have teaching appointments with the Famed at the University of Alberta.
Research takes place within a highly collaborative environment for both fundamental and translational research
and builds on inter-departmental strengths in neurobiology, developmental biology, vascular biology, and
molecular genetics of vision. Clinical research strengths include clinical trials, ocular genetics, electrophysiology
and tel-ophthalmology. the Department also has a vibrant teaching and learning environment with a strong
commitment to undergraduate medical education, postgraduate medical education, (residency and fellowship
programs, including international fellows) as well as to graduate student education.
This position will comprise research, educational, clinical, and leadership roles with percentage time allocation
in each area dependent on the applicant's strengths and potential contributions. The successful candidate will
be provided clinical and operating room allocation as required at the Eye Institute of Alberta. There will be an
expectation to take regular on call within the Department call schedule and to participate in resident and
medical student teaching. Newly renovated laboratory space is also available as well as support from a
productive network of vision scientists who are part of Alberta Vision Net.
The Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) is a center of excellence for all levels of ophthalmic care and serves a
population of almost 4 million people around Edmonton and in the North. The hub of the EIA is the Royal
Alexandra Hospital (RAH) but it also includes other Alberta Health Service facilities in the Edmonton zone - the
Stollery Children's Hospital, Westview Health Center and the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital.

Candidates must be certified or eligible to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be based on fee
for service as well as salary support from FoMD at the University of Alberta. The Department will be applying
for an Academic Alternative Funding Plan and if successful, the position will be supported through a generous
salary for all work done.

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.
Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.
Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.
Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.
Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.
Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.
Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
