Job Description

Locum Palliative Care Physician

Covenant Health, in association with Alberta Health Services, is inviting applications for a part time 0.5 FTE locum Palliative Care physician with the Edmonton Zone Palliative Care Program.

Alberta Health Services is Canada’s largest and only provincial health region providing services for a population of over 4.2 million people.
The applicant will work with the work with the Covenant Health Palliative Care consult service supervised by the medical leadership of Dr. Robin Fainsinger. At the direction of the Edmonton Zone Section Chief Palliative Care Program, there may be intermittent requirements to work in other clinical service locations, including an acute tertiary palliative care unit, consult services to other acute care institutions, out-patient clinics, as well as palliative care consultant support to primary physicians caring for patients in the in-patient hospice units and in the community.
Duties will include completion of new consults and follow up visits. These visits will be in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Service will be provided for 3 to 5 days during the standard work week (Monday to Friday). The successful applicant will also share on call responsibility for after-hours call during the week. Participation in the city wide weekend on call service is also expected.
Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Specialty training in an accredited Palliative Care residency program is required.
This position is not eligible for AHS Sponsorship of a CPSA Practice Readiness Assessment.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
