Family Medicine Hospital Care, University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton

Alberta Health Services in partnership with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, are inviting applications from Family Physicians to join the Department of Family Medicine in the Edmonton Zone.

Edmonton Zone hospitals are affiliated with the University of Alberta, and serve as important training facilities for residents and students. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is located on the southern boundary of the University of Alberta Campus in central Edmonton. The UAH Family Medicine Program serves individuals with acute, severe and complex health issues. The inpatient Family Medicine Program offers treatment by an interdisciplinary health care team consisting of consisting of nurses and Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Dieticians, Social Workers, and Pharmacists. The team works closely with Psychiatrists, Geriatricians, Emergency Physicians, Surgeons and Internal Medicine generalists and subspecialists. The Family Medicine Health Care Team (HCT) also maintains contact with community practitioners carefully protecting continuity between acute care and community care.

Successful Candidates will have a functional knowledge of resources and challenges in Alberta’s primary health care system. This knowledge will be supported by the candidate having completed a two year Family Medicine Residency and by ongoing community Family Medicine services.

The ideal candidate will be available to join the Family Medicine team at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic providing outpatient Family Medicine services, extended-hours clinical services and locum services in Family Medicine. Participation in the acute care HCT roster and in the outpatient and extemded-hours clinical services on-call roster are also expectations for the position. Demonstration of experience in clinical research, medical publications and a commitment to medical learning and scholarly pursuit would be a strong asset for the applicant.

Remuneration is on a fee-for-service basis and is competitive with other North American jurisdictions.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and peer relationships. The successful candidate should be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of Family Medicine.

The successful candidate must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians and of Canada and for medical licensure in the province of Alberta. Successful applicants will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic appointment with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentristry, Department of Family Medicine.

This position is NOT elgibile for AHS sponsorship of a College of Physcians and Surgeons Practice Readiness Assessment.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
