Cardiac Associate - Heart Failure, Transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support (17-MAZ-CAR-SURG-ASSOC-03)
The Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Cardiac Sciences, Alberta Health Services, is accepting applications for the position of a highly skilled Clinical Associate for Heart Failure, Transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support. The Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Alberta has one of the largest training programs in cardiac surgery in Canada.
The Division of Cardiac Surgery presently consists of 10 cardiac surgeons and performs the full range of pediatric and adult cardiac operations performing 1900 open cases per year. The Division is a major transplantation centre for Western Canada performing approximately 70 heart lung and heart transplantations annually. The Division is located in the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute which combines state of the art clinical facilities with outstanding opportunities in both clinical and basic science research. In addition to the cardiac surgeons, the Division has a member with a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology affiliated for clinical research support.
Applicants must have Canadian training (or equivalent) in Cardiac Surgery demonstrating the following areas of expertise:
• Competence with independent organ recovery (heart & lungs) for transplantation
• Familiarity and expertise with ex vivo organ perfusion circuits
• Expertise in Mechanical Circulatory Support – short and long term devices
• Can work effectively within a large team based clinical program
• Effective teacher within a cardiac surgery program
• Competence performing procedures and assisting in the cardiac surgery operating room
• Expertise in perioperative care of the heart failure patient
• Expertise in adult & pediatric congenital patient populations (all areas above)

The successful applicant shall be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Appointment in Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Remuneration will be via fee for service.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
