Pediatric Critical Care Clinical Associate
Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton Zone

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Department of Child Health Alberta Health Services, together with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is offering a Clinical Associate position in Pediatric Critical Care at Stollery Children’s Hospital in the Edmonton Zone. The service consists of a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU). Special training and capability in Cardiac Intensive Care is required.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital provides major tertiary/quaternary support to a vast geographic region encompassing Western Canada. The Pediatric Critical Care group provides care to over 1000 children per year. It is responsible for providing a full array of critical care services in support of the children of Northern Alberta as well as multiple regionalized programs including the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network (over 400 cardio-pulmonary bypass surgeries per year), solid organ transplant programs (heart, liver, lung, small bowel, kidney), active ECLS and VAD programs as well as a busy PICU Transport Team.

This position will provide assessment and management of the medical care needs of patients admitted to the Stollery PICU/PCICU under the supervision of a PICU/PCICU attending physician. The successful candidate will provide 128 hours of on-site service each 4-week block and will include 2 weekend (24 hour shifts) in addition to 5 night calls of 16 hours each. This coverage is inclusive of any 24 hour shifts as necessary to cover statutory holidays and long weekends, and excludes any periods of unpaid leave and PICU transport program calls. Participation in the PICU Transport Program is required and will consist of 2 transport calls per 4-week block.

Physicians must be eligible for independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appropriate Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage. Canadian training (or equivalent) in Pediatric Intensive Care is required.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
