Job Description

The Department of Medicine, and Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone, invite applications for a full-time Respirologist at the Associate or full Professor academic rank to provide leadership to the Section of Respiratory Medicine as its clinical, research, educational and administrative lead. Duties include coordination and organization of clinical, research and educational programs within a multidisciplinary environment, and participation in educational activities within the Cumming School of Medicine.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Calgary Zone operates five teaching hospitals in the city of Calgary serving over 1.8 million residents of Southern Alberta, Southeastern British Columbia and Southwestern Saskatchewan. The Department provides academic and clinical services in an integrated manner across all of the hospital sites and in several ambulatory care settings.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications include an MD, RCPSC certification in Respiratory Medicine, and eligibility for specialist licensure in the Province of Alberta. The candidate must have excellent clinical skills as a credible and respected consultant in respiratory Medicine. In addition to an established reputation for high quality clinical care and teaching, the candidate should have a proven record of scholarly excellence, such as published evidence of research or teaching activities, active contributions to the field of medical education, and/or other demonstrable evidence of leading innovative models of care, quality improvement initiatives, or medical education programs within an academic environment. The candidate should also have some experience in medical administration, including the leadership and management of diverse groups of health care professionals. Moreover, the candidate should be a strategic thinker, with a proven ability to successfully navigate competing clinical and academic priorities. As a Section Head, the candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills, be even-tempered, fair, transparent, accountable and willing to dedicate the necessary time and work to the Section.

• A strong commitment to provide a high level of clinical services for a population of 1.8 million people in southern Alberta and south-eastern British Columbia.

• A unique and internationally renowned Interventional Bronchoscopy team and service.
• A leading edge program for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
• An airways inflammation research group with a broad range of activities in the area of translational research.
• Close collaborations with primary care providers, through a community based rehabilitation program and patient educators who function at all levels within the Health Region and southern Alberta, as well as through Specialist Link and other similarly innovative programs.
• Regular interactions with a world-class team of thoracic surgeons, chest radiologists, pulmonary pathologists and medical oncologists within the local working environment.

Physician Agreement Incentives

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside this community of $0 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Retention Benefit - supports and promotes the retention of physicians in Alberta by rewarding their continuous years of service to Albertans. Physicians receive between $5,141 and $12,852 depending on their years of service to Albertans.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
